Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical design and integration of our first-generation dermatological scanning system. This is a hands-on role requiring deep understanding of precision mechanisms, robotics, and opto-mechanical systems in a medical device context.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and select appropriate collaborative robots analyzing reach, payload, joint ranges, repeatability, and safety features for safe operation around patients.
  • Determine optimal robotic mounting configurations and workspace layout while maintaining patient comfort and safety.
  • Design and integrate the imaging head, including mounting for multiple imagers and illumination systems.
  • Perform basic optical projections and field-of-view analysis to ensure consistent imaging distance and pixel resolution across curved skin surfaces.
  • Collaborate on custom imager head design (potentially with external contractors) when moving beyond off-the-shelf components.
  • Support path planning constraints and mechanical limitations documentation for software team integration.
  • Contribute to design documentation and best practices in preparation for future regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in precision mechanical design, preferably with robotics, optical systems, or medical devices.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360).
  • Experience with robotic systems, kinematic analysis, and motion envelope planning.
  • Familiarity with opto-mechanical integration and basic ray tracing concepts.
  • Proven ability to work independently and drive complex mechanical tasks from concept through prototyping.
  • Experience in a startup or small-team environment is highly desirable.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of medical device design standards (ISO 13485, FDA guidance).
  • Experience with patient-contacting devices or human factors engineering.
  • Basic understanding of computer vision or 3D sensing integration.

About Lumijes Technologies

Lumijes Technologies is a medtech company startup developing an advanced imaging platform designed to transform how skin conditions are assessed. Our technology integrates robotics, artificial intelligence, and multi-spectral imaging to enable faster, more accessible dermatological evaluations — with the goal of improving early detection and patient outcomes.

Based in Florida with our engineering office located near the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, we're a small, mission-driven team building from the ground up — from prototype development through FDA regulatory submission. If you're excited about working at the intersection of medical devices, AI, and robotics in a fast-paced startup environment, we'd love to hear from you.
